Foraging foods tour

Foraging foods tour

This is a see-food-and-eat-it tour. Not only sea food, but that from the turf too, think surf and turf.

Want to get closer to Mother Nature and unearth her transformative powers? Our foraging and medicinal day and multi-day tramps introduce you to the wild edibles and natural healers that are all around us.

We help you find it and eat it by identifying and discovering the range of foods and medicines that are in season. We show you how and where to forage in a safe and sustainable way.

We are lucky in New Zealand to have one of the richest species diversities of seaweeds in the world. With at least over 900 species of which 50 can be readily used.

Learn about edibles, medicines, poisonous, folklore, and more

Does your food taste better when you’ve found it yourself? Of course it does. Food foraging adventures are a hot new travel trend, and tours are popping up in cities and forests all across the globe. Whether you want to hunt for tasty mushrooms, find medicinal plants or enjoy an early-evening dumpster dive in pursuit of a free dessert, you’ll find a food foraging tour with just the right flavor for your travel taste.

Forage and feast

Let us guide you through some of our wonderful countryside, picking wild ingredients that can not only be eaten, but are tasty and good for you. From mushrooms to weeds, porcini to broom flowers, you'll be surprised at what can easily be found and eaten outside your back door. You will get the chance to cook and sample some foods in the field in nearby areas.

Here is a great resource: New Zealand Fruit and Food Share Map. Find fruit and food in your neighbourhood, free!

We not only feed our bodies with highly nutritious food that has not been tempered with through breeding techniques to increase shelf life and transportability, but we also feed our soul, reduce stress and reconnect to our primal inner being. For millions of years humans ate what they gathered on a daily basis. That we are removed from growing and foraging our food and are now buying it from a supermarket is only a blink in the timeline of human evolution. Connecting to our roots can have a significant effect on us.

During this foraging tour you will learn about many edible greens that are widespread throughout New Zealand and that can be found in many backyards. We will explain their nutritional and medicinal value and easy ways to prepare them.

Wander through field and forest with expert guides, foraging mushrooms, wild fruits and more.

Foraging food tours are a celebration of food, and our food is a celebration of our people, and our people are  acelebration of our land. Behind the local food, home-grown food, wild food and fresh food lie the unique stories of our people.

Getting a taste of what's local is something many of us increasingly prioritise when travelling.

That might entail produce grown, raised, and fished from the region.

You may find yourself in a small open patch, far enough away from the road but on the edge of the bush, looking at how many edible things can be gleaned, even in midwinter: purslane, chickweed, pūhā, oxalis. Then, as you peruse the fringe of the native bush, you find a bounty of kawakawa leaves and berries, kūmarahou, mamaku, harakeke.
