Rangitoto Island Volcanic Sea Kayak Tour

Sea kayak and paddle your way to Rangitoto Island. Our Rangitoto Island sea kayak tour is full of superlatives: Auckland's youngest volcano having appeared around 600 years ago. Rangitoto Island is also Aucklands largest volcano covering an area of 2,311 ha (5,710 acres). It is also Auckland highest volcano of 260m (850ft); a symmetrical shield volcano cone. Moreover Rangitoto gives home to the largest forest of pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) trees in the world, commonly known as New Zealand Christmas tree (they flower in time to signify Christmas).

Sea Kayaking Rangitoto Island

Our six hour full day sea kayak tour will leave the picturesque St Heliers beach of Auckland. We will paddle about 5 km / 1 hour of sea kayaking through some turquoise calm waters to the shoreline of Rangitoto Island.

Rangitoto Full Day Kayak Trip

This special Auckland sea kayak trip is facilitated by experienced outdoor educators who know how to make a Rangitoto sea kayaking trip special. They will tell you many more things about the Waitemata; meaning ‘sparkling waters’ and even the Cooks Petrels (named in honor of the famous navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook). You may also get to poke your nose into a real 'wild' Rangitoto lava cave as far as the definition of caving takes you ('a passage extending beyond light'). What does Rangitoto Island mean? Rangitoto literally means sky blood. Early Auckland settlers witnessed fiery sky-high eruptions that lit up reddy orange.
