Sea Kayak Course Overview:

The Learn to Sea Kayak course caters to individuals with no prior formal instruction, ensuring a solid foundation in essential knowledge and skills. For convenience, both public courses and custom sessions for groups of four or more are available.

You will develop competencies integral to ensuring safe and proficient beginner sea kayaking experiences.

Sea Kayak Equipment Knowledge and Care:

  • Ensure equipment is well-maintained and in good condition.
  • Conduct pre-activity checks for damage and fit.
  • Use equipment according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Adjust foot pegs for rudder control and stability.
  • Stow safety equipment appropriately, including flares, communication device, first aid kit, hand pump, and tow line.
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear for environmental conditions.
  • Correctly fit Personal Flotation Device (PFD), hatch covers, and spray deck.
  • Demonstrate understanding of equipment properties, usage, advantages, limitations, and storage.

Sea Kayak Personal Paddling Skills:

  • Launch and land appropriately based on location.
  • Perform forward and reverse paddling.
  • Execute sweep strokes on both sides.
  • Utilize draw strokes to move sideways.
  • Demonstrate support strokes for recovery.
  • Stop within three strokes from fast paddling.
  • Maneuver using strokes, edging, and railing.

Sea Kayak Rescue Techniques:

  • Conduct wet exit with spray deck.
  • Perform self-rescue from capsized kayak without specialized equipment.
  • Effect self-rescue with specialized equipment within three minutes.
  • Demonstrate effective swimming in sea kayaking attire.
  • Rescue and re-entry of single and double kayak occupants.
  • Assist weak, cold, or injured clients back into kayak.
  • Employ towline systems for kayak and swimmer towing.

  • Keep paddling duration under two hours for an optimal fun-to-fatigue ratio.
