Multisport Grade Two Certificate (G2C™)

Duration: 1 or 2 days (you choose)

This is a one or two-day grade two certification, often preceded by our two-day training course.

This is only for people with experience and confidence to come along and demonstrate their skills and share their knowledge without any help or instruction.

Our multisport kayak instructors and assessors help you gain your Coast to Coast Grade 2 Kayak Certificate through planning and preparation for kayak stages.

Social Nature Movement has been kayaking as long as rivers have flowed. Our firm foundations in the canoe and kayak industry have seen thousands of people successfully kayak. Our clients race the Kathmandu Coast to Coast in large numbers because we help many in gaining their Kayaking Grade II Certificate (G2C™).

Duration: 1-2 days (you choose).

Accommodation: Usually at a campground with all facilities. We offer Glamping; everything is done and brought for you.

Meals: Self-catered.

Locations: depending on weather and clients; rivers we use are the Mohaka River (Napier), Waioeka River (Opotiki), Rangitikei River (Taihape), Waikato (Taupo), Rangitaikei (Rotorua), Otaki River (Wellington), Whanganui (Taumarunui) and Tongariro (Turangi)

If you want to do better on river trips or are on the fast-track to your personal best kayak stage, this service will extend your ability beyond kayaking. Many active individuals, serious competitors and athletes are coached by us after they have completed their Kayaking Grade Two Certificate, are on the road to their next big event, need to refresh or simply want more water time.

Our staff have a thirst for improvement through planning and preparation and our canoe and kayak business has only strengthened. We coach and train primarily on flat and moving waters close to your home, school or work. Contact us, we will help!

This Coast to Coast Kayaking Grade 2 Certificate teaches you essential river skills needed to compete successfully in your race and beyond. Your Coast to Coast Kayak Grade II Certificate opens the whole world of kayaking grade 2 river tours, extending your scope into white water kayak stages, rafting etc. After this Grade Two certification you will not just survive the river trip, you will arrive in efficient and effective style.

Guidance for first-time Coast to Coast Kayakers

First: Attend our Kayak Coaching and Training; gain fundamental kayak skills and knowledge, helping you get started.

Then: Join the SNM team for a Moving Water Workshop to master the currents and boat control on easier and safer environments before doing river trips.

Next: Book our Multi Sport Kayak Course; get further into moving water and real river tours. Find a boat, paddle etc. you need to race with. Getting suitable gear that works for you is essential. Visit our shop for more clothing and equipment.

Later: Enter our Kayaking Grade Two Certificate; your grade 2 certificate is required for the Coast to Coast Kayak section. Build river experience by attending our river trips. Our weekends away continue improving your kayak stages.

 

Grade 2 certificates are just the beginning...

If you’re new to canoeing and kayaking, your Kayaking Grade 2 Certificate is just the beginning. This grade two certification will help you to improve both your river reading and paddling skills, with the aim of growing in both confidence and ability. This is a great couple of days on the river.

This Grade 2 Certificate is the perfect kayak course to participate in if you’re looking to take your water skills to the next level. You may have just ticked off your first Coast to Coast, be moving into a new canoe and kayak or a seasoned multisport kayaking paddler looking to get more out of your kayak stages and gain precious time. Whichever you are; your Kayaking Grade two Certificate was just the beginning. Even if you have been paddling for years, our Kayaking Grade Two Certificate will help you to improve both your river reading and paddling skills with the aim of understanding how to identify the fastest lines for race day. You will gain in both confidence and ability over the duration of this course.

Take your kayak skills to the next level. Our Kayaking Grade 2 Certificate is an innovative program helping multi-sport paddlers. This is an intensive canoe and kayak staged training program that will take you on a journey like no other than the kayaking race. These advanced trips also serve as a refresher package if you already have Coast to Coast Grade Two multi-sport kayaking experiences or you are on the fast-track to your first Coast to Coast Race. We also understand some people simply crave more while others want to switch off their minds and let their body unwind with the security of having a guide-on-the-side. Social Nature Movement are authorised assessors in Kayaking Grade Two Certificate Auckland for the Kathmandu Coast to Coast World Multi-Sport Championships.

The North Island's most comprehensive Kayaking Grade 2 Certificate Auckland package designed to build your kayaking skills in a safe and progressive manner, with the goal of developing you into a safe and self-sufficient  paddler capable and grade 2 certified to race in events such the Kathmandu’s COAST TO COAST Multisport competition. Starting with the basics of canoe and kayak knowledge, progressing through white water techniques and finishing up with river running, this course will cover all the areas and skills that you need to know for multisport racing. This multisport kayaking grade two certification includes assessment and you will be awarded a Kayaking Grade 2 Certificate.

Itineraries

Grade 2 Whitewater Kayaking Skills

1.1 Identifies and responds appropriately to Grade 2 river features. Eddylines, wave trains, holes, buffer waves, bluffs, side currents and boils.
1.2 Identifies and demonstrates paddling safe and efficient lines.
1.3 Demonstrates efficient and effective forward paddling.
1.4 Demonstrates efficient and effective forward and reverse sweep strokes. Remains balanced.
1.5 Demonstrates effective low brace. Can right self from tipping point. Can use appropriately while paddling in rapid.
1.6 Demonstrates breaking in and out of eddies. Can hold desired line. Remains balanced.
1.7 Demonstrates ferry gliding. Can hold desired line. Remains balanced.

Grade 2 River Safety Skills

2.1 Understands correct use of personal kayaking and safety equipment. Can identify appropriate and inappropriate equipment. Including kayak, PFD, helmet, thermals, paddle, spraydeck.
2.2 Recognises and understands hazards associated with kayaking, including broaching, strainers and foot entrapment. The appropriate actions required to avoid or deal with these hazards are described and/or demonstrated.
2.3 Demonstrates self-rescue with kayak and gear. Candidate capsizes, stays calm, gathers equipment and efficiently moves to bank. Empties boat and paddling again within efficient timeframe.
2.4 Demonstrates safe rapid float position (on back, feet first, feet up etc).
2.5 Demonstrates assertive white water swimming across wave train and eddyline.
2.6 Demonstrates being rescued with aid of another craft (kayaker and/or jetboat).
2.7 Receives a throw bag as a swimmer in Grade 2. Correct holding of rope and body.
2.8 Can describe and identify, prevention, symptoms and treatment of hypothermia.
2.9 Recognises basic river signals and describes appropriate response.

It is shorthand for cubic metre(s) per second. That means there is - for example - a volumetric flow rate equal to that of a cube with sides of one metre moving past a stationary point each second. Data in units of cumec are used along the y-axis or vertical axis of a flow hydrograph.

To pass your Grade 2 kayak certificate in a day you will need prior experience and precise training to ensure that you can do all that is requried on assessment day.

For North Islanders, there are four main rivers used: The Waioeka River, Mohaka River, Rangitikei River and Otaki River.

There are a range of skills and knowledge that you need to present to your Grade 2 kayak certificate assessor. Once satisfied, they will certify you.

We have only ever failed one person for their Grade 2 kayak certificate. Genrally speaking there is a high Grade 2 kayak certificate success rate.

If on the rare chance you fail (we have a 95% success rate), then you are welcome back at half price.

October through to April are the most popular months to do ones Grade 2 kayak certificate. That is because of the warmer weatehr and waters.

You need a Grade 2 kayak certificate to compete in the Kathmandu Coast to Coast Kayak stage.

We select the best staff for the job based on their skills, knolwedge and experiences. They will be an SNM staff member or we will bring in support from equally competent contractors. Sometimes we also bring in (semi)celebrity guests!
