This single-day guided Whanganui River tour is tailored for kayakers seeking to gain river experience in preparation for the Coast to Coast race. It is not a guided canoe tour, rather a Grade 2 Whanganui River guided kayak tour whereby participants do not need to be overly experienced or technically proficient; just enduring. The trip offers comprehensive logistics, safety support, and expert guidance, ensuring you feel confident and well-prepared for race day.

Diverse kayak experiences

If you’re aiming to participate in the Coast to Coast but lack sufficient river time, or if the thought of kayaking the Waimakariri Gorge makes you uneasy, this Whanganui River trip is ideal to get a feel of being in your boat for a long time. It provides a safe, controlled environment where you can practice under the supervision of a professional guide, without the risks of paddling alone or with unfamiliar paddlers.

Many athletes struggle to get enough river practice before the Coast to Coast due to logistical challenges and the risks of solo paddling. This guided trip removes those barriers and removes the likely shock of paddling short distances to the 70km/5hr Waimak paddle. This trip allowing you to focus on honing your paddling skills in a structured setting with your multisport long boat but not using Whanganui River canoes.

A must-do kayak trip for inspiraton and experience

You’ll paddle the Grade 2 Whanganui River in a small group, led by a qualified guide who manages all logistics and safety measures. This experience helps you learn the best lines and build the confidence needed for the kayak stage of the Coast to Coast race.

Available from October to January each year, this Whanganui River paddle is designed to prepare you for the 70km Coast to Coast section of the Waimakariri River. It’s not a time trial but an opportunity to develop the skills and confidence required for a successful race. For those wanting to stay longer, you can run local trails and/or mountain bike to the Bridge to Nowhere.

Are you ready?

This trip offers an intimate experience with small group sizes, expert guidance, and the convenience of renting boats and gear. As a registered and approved Adventure Activity Operator, we strictly adhere to Coast to Coast standards.

Participants must be physically prepared for an 8-hour day, which includes around 6 hours of paddling. To join, you’ll need adequate training, suitable gear (or hire) and a Grade Two Certificate.

As you journey through Whanganui National Park, you’ll discover hidden waterfalls, dense native forests, and the serene beauty of a river rich in Māori history and legend. The stretch from Taumarunui to Whakahoro is especially captivating, featuring winding paths through narrow gorges and gentle rapids—ideal for refining your paddling skills in either a sea kayak or a multisport long boat. These calm yet challenging waters provide the perfect environment to develop the precise control and endurance essential for the Coast to Coast race.

Whether you’re navigating the river’s tranquil stretches or tackling its spirited rapids, this adventure offers a unique opportunity to enhance your paddling technique.
