The Duke of Edinburgh Award Auckland programme supports young people aged 14–25 across Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau, New Zealand’s largest city and iconic City of Sails, to complete Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. At Social Nature Movement (SNM), we are a recognised Open Award Centre, meaning you can complete the entire Award — including training, mentoring and qualification requirements — directly with us.
Participants can join through schools, Open Award centres like SNM, or independent pathways, making this award accessible regardless of background or schooling.
With its mix of harbours, volcanic landscapes, native forests, coastlines and offshore islands, Auckland provides an exceptional setting for personal growth, service and outdoor adventure.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a voluntary, non-competitive youth development programme designed to help young people grow through structured personal challenge, teamwork and real-world experiences. It supports participants to set and achieve meaningful goals across four sections:
Skills development – learning or improving a practical, creative or intellectual skill
Physical recreation – improving wellbeing and physical fitness
Voluntary service – giving time to help others or support environmental care
Adventurous Journey – planning and completing a team-based outdoor expedition
At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project, spending time away from home working with new people on a shared purpose.
As an Open Award Centre, SNM provides ongoing support, mentoring and verification for all sections of the Award.
The Bronze Award introduces participants to the Award framework, focusing on consistency, confidence and personal responsibility. Through SNM, participants receive tailored coaching to shape meaningful activity goals and stay on track.
The Silver Award requires longer participation and deeper engagement. With SNM support, participants build resilience, leadership and advanced planning skills across all sections.
The Gold Award is the highest level of the programme. It involves more demanding challenges, a high-quality Adventurous Journey and completion of a Residential Project, with SNM guiding participants through each step.
The Adventurous Journey is a defining part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Participants work in small teams to plan, train for and complete a qualifying outdoor expedition using human-powered travel such as walking, kayaking or cycling.
In the greater Auckland region, Adventurous Journeys typically include:
Waitākere Ranges rainforest tracks and coastal routes
Hunua Ranges bush, streams and backcountry terrain
Hauraki Gulf islands, combining navigation with environmental awareness
Coastal and estuarine kayaking environments
Regional parks and rural landscapes across Tāmaki Makaurau
These Journeys emphasise teamwork, navigation, risk management, weather awareness, self-reliance, safety practices and environmental stewardship.
SNM provides expertise, training sessions, and verification support for every stage of your Adventurous Journey.
This programme suits:
Secondary school students whose schools offer the Award
Young people whose schools do not run the programme
Home-schooled students
Independent participants aged 14–25
Because SNM is an Open Award Centre, you do not need to be enrolled in a school programme to complete every component of the Award.
Minimum completion timeframes depend on the level:
Bronze: at least 6 months
Silver: 6–12 months
Gold: 12–18 months or longer
Participants progress at their own pace while meeting minimum requirements, making the Award compatible with school, sport, work and other commitments. SNM provides flexible planning support to help you manage your timeline.
Completing the Award helps young people to:
Develop leadership, initiative and self-confidence
Build resilience and problem-solving skills
Strengthen university, scholarship and job applications
Gain real-world experience beyond the classroom
Create lasting friendships and memorable experiences
Grow a strong connection to Auckland’s natural environments
With SNM’s support as an Open Award Centre, participants receive structured guidance and mentoring that align with Award standards.
