Duke of Edinburgh Award Christchurch

Bronze, Silver & Gold Award Pathways Across Christchurch and Canterbury

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Christchurch programme supports young people aged 14–25 across Christchurch / Ōtautahi and the wider Canterbury region to complete Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels. Through Social Nature Movement (SNM), a recognised Open Award Centre, participants can complete their entire Award journey in Christchurch — including mentoring, verification and Adventurous Journeys — without needing to be enrolled through a school.

Christchurch’s unique position between coastline, braided rivers, rolling plains and the foothills of the Southern Alps creates an outstanding environment for youth development, community service and outdoor challenge.

About the Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a voluntary, non-competitive youth development programme designed to help young people develop life skills through sustained commitment, challenge and responsibility. Participants work toward personal goals across four structured sections:

  • Skills – developing a practical, creative or intellectual skill

  • Physical activity – improving fitness, wellbeing and healthy habits

  • Voluntary service – contributing time to support communities or the natural environment

  • Adventurous Journey – planning and completing a team-based outdoor expedition

At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project, spending time away from home working with new people toward a shared purpose.

As an Open Award Centre, SNM provides guidance, mentoring and verification across all sections of the Award in Christchurch.

Bronze Award (14+)

The Bronze Award introduces participants to the Award framework, focusing on building confidence, routine and personal responsibility. Participants develop consistency, time-management skills and self-motivation through achievable goals.

Adventurous Journeys in the Christchurch and Canterbury Region

The Adventurous Journey is a core requirement of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and a defining experience for many participants. Working in small teams, participants plan, train for and complete a qualifying expedition using human-powered travel such as tramping, cycling or kayaking.

Christchurch & Canterbury Adventurous Journey Environments

Adventurous Journeys in the Christchurch and wider Canterbury region commonly take place across:

  • Canterbury Plains, focusing on route planning and distance management

  • Braided river systems, requiring navigation and environmental awareness

  • Banks Peninsula, combining coastal terrain with hill country

  • Foothills of the Southern Alps, introducing elevation and variable conditions

  • Rural and semi-remote environments, balancing access with challenge

Journeys emphasise preparation, navigation accuracy, teamwork, safety management, weather awareness and environmental responsibility across diverse landscapes.

SNM provides structured training, supervision and verification to ensure all Adventurous Journeys meet Award requirements while maintaining high safety standards.
