The Duke of Edinburgh Award Wellington programme supports young people aged 14–25 across Wellington / Te Whanganui-a-Tara, New Zealand’s capital city, to complete Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels. Through Social Nature Movement (SNM), a recognised Open Award Centre, participants can complete their entire Award journey in Wellington — including mentoring, verification and Adventurous Journeys — without needing to be enrolled through a school.
Wellington’s distinctive environment of harbour, rugged coastline, steep hills, forested ranges and fast-changing weather provides an exceptional setting for youth development, leadership training and outdoor challenge.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a voluntary, non-competitive youth development programme designed to help young people develop skills and confidence beyond the classroom. Participants work toward personal goals across four structured sections:
Skills – developing a practical, creative or intellectual skill
Physical activity – improving fitness, health and wellbeing
Voluntary service – contributing time to support communities or the environment
Adventurous Journey – planning and completing a team-based outdoor expedition
At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project, spending time away from home working with new people toward a shared purpose.
As an Open Award Centre, SNM provides guidance, mentoring and verification across all sections of the Award.
The Bronze Award introduces participants to the Award framework, focusing on building habits, commitment and confidence. Participants learn time management, goal-setting and personal responsibility through achievable challenges.
The Silver Award involves extended participation and deeper engagement. Participants develop stronger independence, leadership skills and resilience across all sections.
The Gold Award is the highest level of the programme. It includes more demanding challenges, a significant Adventurous Journey and completion of a Residential Project, supported and overseen by SNM as an Open Award Centre.
The Adventurous Journey is a core requirement of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and one of its most impactful components. Participants work in small teams to plan, train for and complete a qualifying expedition using human-powered travel such as tramping, kayaking or cycling.
Adventurous Journeys in the Wellington and lower North Island region commonly take place across:
Remutaka and Tararua foothills, focusing on navigation and elevation
Coastal routes with exposure to wind and weather
Harbour and sheltered-coast kayaking environments
Forest parks and regional reserves near Wellington City
Mixed urban-to-wild transitions, requiring careful planning and logistics
Journeys place strong emphasis on preparation, teamwork, route planning, weather interpretation, safety management and group decision-making — skills especially relevant to Wellington’s variable conditions.
SNM provides structured training, supervision and verification for all Wellington-based Adventurous Journeys.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Wellington programme is suitable for:
Secondary school students
Young people whose schools do not offer the Award
Home-schooled participants
Independent participants aged 14–25
Because SNM is an Open Award Centre, participation is not limited to school-based programmes.
Minimum completion times vary by level:
Bronze: at least 6 months
Silver: 6–12 months
Gold: 12–18 months or longer
Participants can progress at a pace that fits alongside school, tertiary study, work or other commitments, with planning support provided by SNM.
Young people who complete the Award gain:
Stronger confidence, resilience and independence
Leadership, teamwork and communication skills
Recognised evidence of commitment for tertiary study or employment
Real-world experience beyond academic results
A meaningful sense of achievement through challenge
Completing the Award in Wellington also builds adaptability and decision-making skills in complex outdoor environments.
