How to Prepare for the Tiritiri Matangi Twilight Tour
WHAT TO WEAR AND WHAT TO BRING
Dress in layers you do not mind getting damp. Quick-dry shorts or leggings work well under a paddle jacket, with a warm thermal top for after dark on the water. Bring a beanie, a warm second layer for the bush walk, and a change of clothes in the car for the trip home. Avoid cotton, which holds water and chills quickly on the return paddle.
A small dry bag is useful for a phone, a snack, and a head torch with a red filter. The tour provides all paddling and safety gear, including buoyancy aids, spray skirts, and tour torches. You do not need to bring a kayak, a paddle, or a wetsuit. Sunscreen, sunglasses for the outbound leg, and insect repellent for the bush walk round out the kit.
FITNESS, HEALTH, AND HONEST SELF-ASSESSMENT
The fitness baseline is the ability to paddle steadily for around ninety minutes at a guided pace, walk slowly through bush terrain for two hours, and stay alert for a late-night return paddle. If you regularly walk, cycle, swim, or do similar moderate exercise, you have the base capacity. You do not need to be a kayaker or a tramper.
If you have recent injuries, heart conditions, respiratory conditions, mobility issues, or you are pregnant, please call before you book. We are not going to talk you out of a trip you can safely enjoy, and we are not going to put you on the water for one you cannot. The honest conversation at the booking stage saves a much harder one on the launch beach.
THE DAYTIME FERRY VERSUS THE TWILIGHT TOUR
The Department of Conservation runs a daytime ferry service to Tiritiri Matangi that lands visitors for self-guided day walks. The day trip is excellent in its own right, with good chances of seeing takahē, bellbirds, saddlebacks, and other day-active species. It is family friendly, low effort, and a different experience entirely from the twilight tour.
The twilight tour is not a replacement for the ferry, and the ferry is not a replacement for the tour. The night experience gives you wildlife the day visitors never see, in a setting and pace they cannot reach, with a guide who lives the island after dark. If you have not been to the island before, the day trip is the easy entry point. If you want the deeper experience, the twilight tour is the next step.
WHEN TO BOOK AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Twilight tour dates run through the warmer months and book out quickly for weekends and school holidays. If you have a specific date in mind, book early rather than late. Mid-week dates have more availability and a slightly quieter group dynamic, which suits people travelling for the wildlife rather than the social side.
Once you book, we send a confirmation with the meeting point, the time, the gear list, and any seasonal notes for the date you have chosen. If conditions on the day require a postponement, we move you to the next available night at no charge. The full main tour page links to the booking form and the latest available dates.
