Frequently Asked Questions About Bioluminescence Tours

Embark on a magical journey into the world of bioluminescence with our comprehensive FAQ section. Here, you’ll find expanded answers to common questions about our tours, what to expect, and how to prepare for this enchanting experience.

General Questions

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is the emission of light by living organisms, resulting from chemical reactions within these creatures. It is most commonly seen in marine environments and is used for communication, predation, or defence.

Can bioluminescence be predicted?

While we cannot guarantee sightings, our tours are scheduled based on the best available historical data and optimal environmental conditions, which significantly increase the chances of experiencing this natural phenomenon.

Is bioluminescence an algae or organism?

Bioluminescence is produced by living organisms, not algae. These organisms undergo chemical reactions that cause them to glow, often in a spectacular display.

Tour Details

When is the best time to see bioluminescence?

The optimal viewing times are during the warmer months from October to May, after sunset when it is completely dark, and under conditions of no wind or rain.

Where can you see bioluminescence in New Zealand?

Bioluminescence can be observed at many of East Coast beaches in the Upper North Island, from Auckland through to the Bay of Islands, known for their excellent conditions.

Preparation and Safety

Are there toilets on site?

There are no toilet facilities at Okura, so please plan accordingly and use facilities before arriving for the tour.

What should I bring on a bioluminescence tour?

We recommend dark clothing to prevent light reflection, comfortable footwear, a red flashlight to minimise light pollution, water, snacks, and insect repellent.

Will I get cold or wet?

Our tours are conducted during the warmer months under fair weather conditions, which minimises the chances of getting cold. You might get wet up to your feet or shins, and swimming with the bioluminescence is an optional delight.

Should we eat dinner before the tour?

Yes, as our tours generally start around sunset, typically around 20:00. Eating beforehand is advisable, though bringing a dessert or snack for afterward can enhance your experience.

Tour Experience

What if we do not see bioluminescence?

While the primary aim is to experience bioluminescence, the tour itself is a complete ‘nature’ experience. If the bioluminescence is not visible, you are welcome to join another tour at half price.

Are the kayaks stable and comfortable?

Yes, our kayaks are extremely stable and equipped with comfortable foam bum pads and backrests, ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience.

Who will be my guide?

Our guides are selected based on their expertise, knowledge, and experience in bioluminescence and kayaking. They may be SNM staff members or competent contractors, and occasionally, we feature (semi)celebrity guest guides.
