What to Expect on the Auckland Sea Kayak Tour as a Cruise Ship Passenger
WHY THIS TOUR SUITS A CRUISE DAY IN AUCKLAND
Cruise ship days in Auckland usually run for eight to ten hours in port. After the gangway opens and the queue clears, you typically have around six hours on shore before the all aboard call. A full day Auckland kayaking tour does not fit that window. The Chelsea Sugar Factory tour does, with a comfortable buffer each side.
The total experience runs around four hours including the briefing and the factory stop. You can be off the ship at nine, on the water by ten, off the water by one, and back at the Princes Wharf cruise terminal by mid afternoon. That leaves time for a meal or a quick look around the central city before the all aboard.
GETTING FROM THE CRUISE TERMINAL TO THE LAUNCH SITE
Princes Wharf, the main Auckland cruise terminal, is about three kilometres from the Westhaven Marina launch site. A taxi or rideshare takes seven to ten minutes and is by far the simplest option. We can also arrange a pickup at the terminal on request if you book the upgraded option in advance.
Public buses run along Fanshawe Street between the cruise terminal and the Westhaven area, with a short walk at each end. Walking the whole distance is possible in about forty minutes along the waterfront, which is itself a beautiful start to the day if you are not pressed for time.
HOW WE BUILD IN A TIME BUFFER FOR CRUISE GUESTS
Cruise passengers cannot risk missing the all aboard call. We schedule the cruise dates of the tour to finish at least two and a half hours before the published ship departure time, and we hold the schedule firmly. If the weather forces a delay, we will cancel and refund rather than push the schedule, because we are not going to be the reason you miss your ship.
When you book, mention your ship and port date. We will check the published departure time against the tour schedule and confirm the fit in writing, so there is no ambiguity on the day.
WHAT CRUISE GUESTS GET OUT OF THE TOUR SPECIFICALLY
Most shore excursions in Auckland are coach based. The Chelsea Sugar Factory tour is one of the few that gets you off the bus tour circuit, into a kayak, under the harbour bridge, and onto a working New Zealand factory site. It is a memorable, photographable, slightly different excursion that almost no one else on your ship will be doing.
If you are travelling with a partner who would rather walk the city, we are happy to book one of you on the tour while the other does a self guided wander. The Chelsea Sugar Factory mini tour is also possible to do on its own without the kayak, and we can point your travel partner towards that option.
