Weekends-Only Multisport Kayak Course

Skill Building + Certification in Two Weekends | Central North Island, NZ

If you want to develop real kayak ability on moving water while keeping your training structured around your life, our Weekends-Only Multisport Kayak Course is designed for you. This programme lets you build skills one weekend and then pursue your Grade Two Kayak Certificate (G2C™) on a subsequent weekend, using a flexible 1- or 2-day format each time.

This course is specifically designed for multisport and Coast to Coast athletes, paddlers targeting efficient and confident Grade 2 performance, and those seeking structured progression without committing to long blocks away from work or family. It is equally suitable for paddlers chasing sub-5-hour kayak splits, Longest Day preparation, or simply confident, real-world river competence.

Delivered exclusively on Central North Island rivers that provide appropriate moving water conditions, this course supports progression from foundational technique through to certified ability in a manageable, focused weekend schedule.

Same pathway. Different schedule.
The Weekends-Only Course delivers the same Grade 2 training and certification pathway as our standard integrated programme – but distributed across separate weekends to suit work, family, and training schedules.

BONUS INCLUDED WITH EVERY BOOKING

Complimentary 2-hour Flat & Moving Water Kayak Session in Auckland
Ideal for technique refinement, confidence building, assessment preparation, or post-course consolidation.

How the Weekend Structure Works

This course is built around two separate weekends, allowing skills to bed in while maintaining momentum.
Weekend 1 — Training:
Choose either a 1-day or 2-day training block to improve technique, confidence, and river understanding before assessment. This weekend is focused purely on skill development — no assessment pressure.
Weekend 2 — Certification:
After an appropriate training weekend, you return on a later weekend for your Grade Two Kayak Certificate assessment. Again, you can choose a 1-day or 2-day assessment format depending on your experience and readiness.
This format suits paddlers who want to learn and certify without long blocks away from home, work, or other commitments, while still building strong, durable technique.

Weekend 1 — Multisport Kayak Training (1 or 2 Days)

What This Training Emphasises
This foundational weekend is designed to build technical skill, safety competence, and decision-making ability on moving water.

Technical Skills

  • Efficient forward paddling and propulsion
  • Sweep and reverse strokes
  • Draw and sculling strokes
  • Low brace and stability control
  • Boat control, edging, balance, and deflection
  • Ferry glides and eddy turns

River Skills & Decision-Making

  • Reading currents, eddies, wave trains, and river features
  • Line choice and racing lines
  • Adapting to changing flow and river variability

Safety & Group Skills

  • Wet exits and controlled swimming
  • Self-rescue and assisted rescue
  • Throw-bagging and rope rescues
  • Rapid float swim position and safe re-entry
  • Group communication and spacing

Online Theory Component

To maximise river time, core theory is completed online prior to the course. This covers river safety principles, hydrology fundamentals, and hazard awareness, allowing in-person time to focus on practical skill acquisition and applied learning.
This training is ideal for athletes preparing for multisport events, paddlers stepping up from flatwater, or anyone seeking structured, high-quality kayak coaching without assessment pressure.

1-Day Training Option

Day 1 — Core Skills & River Awareness
Introduction to moving water fundamentals, paddle technique, line choice, and basic navigation skills, reinforced with real-time coaching.
Outcome: Stronger understanding of technique and increased confidence in moving water.

2-Day Training Option

Day 1 — Foundational Technique
Paddle mechanics, stability, balance, and early river interactions.
Day 2 — Intermediate Skills & Flow Integration
Advanced strokes, eddy turns, ferry glides, and reading line variability.
Outcome: Deeper technical competence and improved readiness for certification.

Weekend 2 — Grade Two Kayak Certification (1 or 2 Days)

Why a Weekend Certification Works
Separating training and assessment allows skills to settle before being demonstrated under realistic conditions.

1-Day Assessment Option

For paddlers who are assessment-ready.
Focus areas include:

  • Controlled movement through Grade 2 water
  • Effective river reading and line choice
  • Reliable self-rescue and assisted rescue skills
  • Independent decision-making under dynamic conditions

Outcome: Certification is issued if the Grade Two standard is demonstrated.

2-Day Assessment + Refinement Option

Designed for paddlers who prefer a short refinement phase before assessment.
Day 1

  • Skills confirmation, targeted coaching, and assessment-style practice

Day 2

  • Formal Grade Two assessment with independent performance criteria

Outcome: Increased confidence, cleaner technique, and a fair opportunity to meet the standard without unnecessary repetition.

Knowledge & Judgment Outcomes

Participants develop a working understanding of:

  • Interpreting weather forecasts and river flow data
  • River hydrology, including:
  • Eddies, wave trains, holes, boils, braids, bluffs, buffer waves, side currents
  • Hazard identification and management:
  • Strainers, foot entrapment, broaching, hypothermia
  • Safe decision-making in dynamic river environments

Central North Island Rivers — Consistent, Real, Progressive

All training and assessment events take place on carefully selected Central North Island rivers because they:

  • Provide reliable Grade 1–2 conditions
  • Offer progressive challenge without unnecessary risk
  • Reduce travel and logistical overhead
  • Match conditions encountered in multisport events and real-world paddling

Time on the water is spent improving technique, not relocating.

Who This Course Is Ideal For

  • Multisport and Coast to Coast athletes building kayak ability for race contexts
  • Paddlers targeting efficient, confident Grade 2 performance
  • Recreational paddlers seeking structured progression
  • Paddlers stepping up from flatwater or Grade 1 rivers
  • Existing Grade 2 holders seeking refresher coaching or additional river time
  • Anyone preferring weekend-based learning and assessment pathways

This course is not designed for complete beginners. Those new to moving water are encouraged to complete introductory training before pursuing certification.

SNM delivers a Grade 2 paddler capability lifecycle.
This lifecycle has three states:

  • Build confidence (training)
  • Validate competence (certification)
  • Maintain capability (refresher / re-certification)
